Stanley Black & Decker Why we own it: Stanley Black & Decker is in the later innings of a multi-year restructuring plan. The one problem is the broader demand environment is still mostly soft, preventing management from raising the midpoint of its outlook. This dynamic makes Stanley Black & Decker one of the more interest-rate-sensitive stocks we have in the portfolio. Stanley Black & Decker has been paying a dividend for 147 consecutive years, with increases in each of the past 56. Estee Lauder tumbled Wednesday as investors focused on the company's weak fiscal fourth-quarter outlook instead of its strong third-quarter numbers. Estee Lauder Why we own it: We see profitability improving as management executes on its turnaround plan and works to improve gross margin performance. These are signs the worst should be behind Estee Lauder. While full-year adjusted earnings are still expected to decline on an annual basis, Estee Lauder encouragingly bumped up its outlook. Sales, earnings, segment profit margin, and organic growth all came in ahead of expectations, despite some minor misses in certain operating segments. In addition to the strong headline results, Electrical Americas, its biggest division, realized another record for sales, segment profit, and segment margins — driven partly by data center demand for AI computing power. Electrical Americas achieved yet another record for sales, segment profit, and segment margins with management noting strength in the data center market. The rise in power demand for data centers — which are booming from the need to support a new world of AI technologies — is also fueling demand for the providers of data center parts. "Expected power usage for U.S. data centers under construction is equivalent to more than 50% of the power currently used by U.S. data centers. Several years out, even after these data centers are constructed, some expect data center power consumption to double again," analyst Thomas Thornton wrote in a Wednesday note. Management is raising its own capital expenditures for the first time in a decade to meet the power demand for data centers, BofA added. The Nasdaq sank 2% on Friday as Netflix dropped nearly 11% post-earnings and Club stock Nvidia fell 10%, entering bear market territory but still up more than 50% in 2024. Abbott Laboratories Why we own it : Abbott is a high-quality medtech company growing at a fast clip. As Abbott's organic sales growth continues to shine, the market will realize both concerns are overblown. We also love that EPS results on Tuesday came in above the range management had forecasted — a classic case of under-promising and over-delivering. ABT YTD mountain Abbott Laboratories YTD Organic growth was very strong, up nearly 11%, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of double-digit increases. Morgan Stanley delivered mostly better-than-expected first-quarter results Tuesday morning — a much-needed report for the bank, whose stock has lagged industry peers and tested our patience. Wells Fargo Why we own it : We bought Wells Fargo as a turnaround story under CEO Charlie Scharf. In addition, the bank's net interest margin came up short, and therefore net interest income. However, bank interest income estimates depend on interest rates, a factor Wells can't control. Net interest income fell 17% year over year as deposits declined due to customers reallocating cash into higher-yielding securities. Non-interest income increased 9% thanks to higher asset-based fees driven by an increase in market valuations.

Constellation Brands reported better-than-expected quarterly earnings Thursday, driven by strength in its beer business that more than offset continued weakness in wines and spirits. Management's upbeat forecast for fiscal year 2025 should send the stock to new all-time highs. Constellation Brands Why we own it : We like Constellation Brands for its beer franchise, which includes popular Mexican brands Modelo, Corona and Pacifico. More importantly, the sales gains in the beer business are almost entirely driven by volume gains, not higher prices. Management cited Circana channel data as evidence that its beer business outperformed the total U.S. beer category and remained the top dollar sales share gainer.

Eaton and DuPont are both unconventional AI plays, as the data center market grows to meet the demands of the generative AI boom. Wells Fargo Investment Institute last month described rising data center demand as having positive "trickle-down effects" on the industrial sector. WFII wrote that spending from Big Tech firms into data centers, in particular, creates "meaningful downstream impacts" for industrial companies. Amazon Web Services is reportedly investing nearly $150 billion in data centers within the next 15 years to support AI efforts. During a Barclays investor conference in February, CFO Lori Koch said DuPont's data center and AI exposure will help boost the company's electronics business.
